I'm sure neither I nor Ravenhill would actually disparage real work done by actual people in the field - Ravenhill's point is far more an attack on Arts Council 'speak' than on worthwhile initiatives.

Are you serious about that job offer, or was it a joke? It's actually rather hard to tell. I suppose part of Ravenhill's point is also drawn from the periodic despair felt by all writers/artists that they are just pissing in the wind when it comes to solving the world's problems. It is perhaps all the more savage because it is partly self abuse.

And yes, I should go back to Barker far more often than I do. I re-read most of the Europeans the other day and it really does need to be staged again. I saw No End of Blame at Lamda a couple of years back, and it really is great. My memory is that they fudged that first scene slightly - although the later nude model in the life class they totally went for and it was quite amazing.Andrew Haydonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05568061302451610140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4481691725314537521.post-55616074272753849552007-09-13T10:44:00.000+02:002007-09-13T10:44:00.000+02:00"Of course it is risible, and then, it is increasi..."Of course it is risible, and then, it is increasingly sinister."

I was recently offered a job as a dramaturg/drama therapist working out of Kabul...

Speaking of which there's a beautiful scene at the start of Barker's No End of Blame in which a fleeing woman is forced to stand naked at gunpoint so that a soldier/artist can draw her.
